Road Facts/R.O.W.

St. Charles Township Jurisdiction is an area of a little over 36 square miles.  The St. Charles Township Road District maintains the roads and right-of-ways of the streets in the unincorporated areas of St. Charles Township.

We have right-of-ways measuring from 40 feet to 66 feet, or 20 feet to 33 feet from the center of the road which is the easement in front of your property.

With that being said, nothing should be put in the road right-of-way without first contacting the highway commissioner to make sure it is allowable.  Nothing is to be placed in the right of way that could cause bodily harm to an individual or vehicle.  Nothing should be placed in the road right-of-way such as rocks, boulders, logs, signs, monuments, etc., also.  The township is not responsible for any structures of landscaping done over culverts.  If you need more clarification please call the Road District office and we will answer any questions regarding your concerns.

Within these right-of-ways the following maintenance is done:

  • Blacktop Patching & Coating
  • Blacktop Overlay
  • Brush Pickup
  • Gravel or Black Dirt Shouldering
  • Litter Pickup
  • Mulch Program
  • Roadside Mowing
  • Ditch Cleaning
  • Streetlights
  • Street Sweeping
  • Traffic Control Signage
  • Tree & Brush Trimming & Removal
  • Winter Snow & Ice Control
  • Access/Culvert Permits

St. Charles Township is equipped to handle most of these duties and to contract some with private enterprise.  We also have excellent intergovernmental cooperation with the municipalities in and around the township boundaries.  Manpower and equipment are often exchanged to make all of us more efficient.
